Installation view of Vía Ascensión at Yale University, New Haven, CT, 2012

Project is based on a perceptual reimagining of a historic flight made by my great uncle, lieutenant Armando Cortínez Mujica, over the Andes mountains in 1919. Cortínez was the first person in history to cross the Andes and return- notably without functioning aeronautical devices nor with the permission of the Chilean Airforce. His only guide during the flight was to follow the sun, a blinding glare on the icy peaks.
